Twitter Idiots: Derby Special

Heres a little tip in life. When 2 days previously you came from 2 goals behind to win a game, you'd think you'd excercise restraint in mocking a team who have just gone 2 goals down, even more so a main rival. Even more so when a tranche of said rival fans now losing 2-0 had been ripped apart for laughing at them being 2-0 down on Twitter.

But not in these cases. Bravo idiots. Thanks for the material.

On the other hand, around half of the Tweets I saved have been since deleted by people trying to cover their tracks and so won't work. If I'd been at home I'd have screen saved them. Ah Well shame, these will have to do.

How did that work out for you? Hope you spend the winnings wisely

Yes, Lets all laugh. At us winning. Brilliant

No, that bubble is still going fine thanks

Pessimism, Forest and Twitter

It’s been an entertaining few days, if you like to subject yourself to the fluctuating moods of the average Forest fan on Twitter. It seems a great many seem to get too involved and can’t bring about any detachment from the on-going situation at the club.

Is this an indicator of a lack of something else to do in some people’s life? Possibly. Is it indicative of today’s world where with on-going 24 hours news and social media we have a great many potential sources of information at our disposal? Yes. And that a great many of the movers and shakers are contactable speaks volumes.

But I have spoken before about this. The nature of new media and its influences on fans expectations and the exchange of ideas and information instantly rather than previous forms mean we always want these answers. Plus we now have transfer windows which drive this kind of activity in a timed frenzy.
But what’s apparent is there is a great deal of pessimism at the core of many fans. And weirdly they seem to revel in it. It’s almost as if some fans can’t wait for a deal to collapse so they can tweet their disappointment or the usual array of told you so’s. There’s no patience and the simple skill of sitting it out and waiting for what happens.

Djebbour
The transfer of Rafik Djebbour has been a typical example since it came to light again this week. Because it’s been on the cards for so long and seems drawn out (international transfers often are) fans instead of waiting for the confirmation immediately start seeing some kind of dark arts at play.
Couple that with that transpired with Hobbs and you have a perfect storm of impatience. Hobbs as well know has left and we had a long piece on here on Friday all about it. The fact we said we’d sorted out a deal for most fans meant it was a done deal forgetting personal terms which it transpired were not agreed. Hobbs realised he could get more money elsewhere, and as any of us would do in our careers held out for more money.

SO it didn’t go through. So because of this example some now hold Fawaz accountable, despite him doing all he could save for smashing the wage structure and then all that involves with possible ramifications with other players inflating their worth.

So instead of seeing the positive that we could be about to sign another player elsewhere in another position, the wailing and the gnashing starts. Because clearly EVERY transfer will go the same way now, despite there not being much evidence. People will cite George Boyd of course but that became obvious there were other games being played there.

Why would Fawaz be “lying” again, would you not think he was chastened by his other experience and only tweet when sure. International clearance can take time (and contrary to other reports Djebbour does not need a work permit, he was born in Grenoble, France) and any smaller details of the deal have to be sorted between Olympiakos and Forest.

Why am I talking about this and pessimism? The following tweets and comments will best illustrate my point.

Just a small sample. And although most of it isn'
t malicious there are seeds of doubt in peoples mind that for some people go from acorns to oaks in record time.

What is apparent is there is a heightened sense of entitlement amongst fans. It's not always healthy. I have no problem with ambition and desire. Where it goes wrong is when fans demand too much.

We will look further at fans demands and what people perceive in regards that in a couple of days.

The Top 10 Reasons why Djebbour Deal Collapsed

We all know the official line. He refused to take a medical. And maybe, just maybe it’s the truth. But that hasn’t stopped numerous tweeters, Facebook pages and forums from wildly speculating on a “real” reason.
By the way, I don’t believe any of this, I just thought it interesting to collate.

Rafik Djebbour

1. Forest tried to offer reduced wages
Forest have form apparently for this under the previous regime, with the infamous Mark Arthur and Wayne Routledge rumour. But this is one rumour doing the rounds, one of the stronger ones being retweeted. It’s feasible I guess, but sounds convenient.

2. Djebbour didn’t want to take medical as he knew he’d fail (1)
Apparently he knew he’d fail a strenuous medical. Quite how the hell anyone knows this beyond me. Someone cited previous knee injuries. Sounds bollocks.

3. Djebbour didn’t want to take medical as he knew he’d fail (2)
Apart from this being highly libellous I’m not saying this is true, merely relaying retardedness. It’s been claimed he’d fail because in almost a Rio style, he knew any sample would come up as negative drugs wise. Pure conjecture.

4. Something vague to do with Ramadan
He’s Muslim, Fawaz is Muslim. Must be something Muslim right? And Ramadan just started!!! That’s where this guys understanding of anything ends. (This guy is always off the scale stupid on Twitter, but I’ll protect him on this one)

5. Forest Backed Out
Like the George Boyd, we got itchy feet and pulled out at last minute citing something vague like this as excuse.

6. Djebbour got a better offer so refused to finish medical knowing it would collapse deal
Probably a winner. The word is thanks to all the Twitter blather other clubs got wind so contacted his agent with an offer gazumping us and sending Raffik on his way.

7. Broadmarsh Centre put him off
Purely in jest but the Broadmarsh is a shit-hole and it could scare someone off. Well its clearly not true, but slightly funny.

8. The Eyes, The Eyes
People can't resists a 20/20jibe can they, basically the old Boyd excuse rehashed.

9. He was never going to sign and used as leverage
In an attempt to lure other clubs out of the woodwork he stalled and took time on the medical, in almost the way Blackadder tried to stall the firing squad

10. There never was a deal
In the weirdest suggestion of the day it was suggested there was never a deal, he was never there and this is all rubbish. This also isn’t Dallas, and this wasn’t all a dream.

Twitter and the Rise of the ITK

Some of you, I am aware, may not be on Twitter or forums, and may not therefore know what an ITK is. Basically it’s someone claiming to be In the Know. If someone needs to claim to ITK, chances are they aren’t. Much like most things in life, those that protest too much are often doing so for a reason.

There is a proliferation of accounts pertaining to be a journalist, or a Consultant to a Sports Management company, or even agents, such wonderfully vague descriptions. The journalists claim to work for a website which will be no more than a trumped up blog site. I could easily therefore claim myself to be a journalist, but that would be silly, I am far from it. But an out of work 21 year old with nothing better to do, well yeah he might claim it, to give himself a little self worth. A Consultant for a Sports Management company is such a wonderfully vague and hard to corroborate title that they might be. They might have been consulted once, many months ago, about something else, so it adds credence to the title. And as for football agent, well yeah, there’s a reason they never say who they are, as that info can be checked on UEFA’s approved list.

So already there we have this rise of accounts claiming to be spilling amazing cutting edge knowledge no-one else does. That’s because they chuck that much crap at a wall, some of it is bound to stick. If I speculate enough that a “striker” is signing and that mention he scored x goals in a European division, it sounds wonderfully cryptic and that I am giving you enough info to guess. Instead it’s enough rope to hang yourself, as it’s just so none specific as to be ridiculous. When something does happen they point to the fact “Well I got that right.”

If you look at any vague none specific prediction you might look right. Astrologers have made careers out of it, Nostradamus is famous for it, but if you actually looked closely at strike rates it’ll be low, until you start moulding that information to suit the means end.

So the news yesterday that we were after 3 players sent these accounts into an orgy of speculation. This then fuels the more hot headed on Twitter and forums into wildly speculating if so and so are the signing. This is the reason these guys do it. Attention. It’s a sad world we live in where by these people are so craving attention and followers that they have to lie. Last year it would be fake accounts, or parody’s. Apart from very clever ones these got tired quickly and are seldom seen (not that it’s currently stopping some) S now it’s all about appearing to have knowledge,
But we have reached a point I believe now where we have become drained and bored of these that even their time is passing. The first few were believed, the next few were taken with a pinch of salt, and the current crop are scorned and disliked. Seen for the ridiculousness of their very enterprise.
That’s the nature of the transfer window though. It breeds such a quick fire burst of activity that it launches everyone into wild speculation. The immediacy of news these days and the rise of 24 hour Sky Sports News means we are so desperate to have our appetites for this sort of thing to be filled. Coupled with at Forest the presence of Fawaz and family and advisers on Twitter it fosters a whole host of new speculation. It’s a frenzy we never saw under Doughty.

But it’s almost unhealthy. Those who are gullible are then laughed at and it creates hostility. Then there are fans that get angry we haven’t signed someone we were rumoured to be in for. But it was only a rumour. People can’t seem to see the distinction between a rumour and the truth. “Why haven’t we signed x player yet” some may ask... Well the truth might be we were never in for them, or that they couldn’t agree a deal.

I like Twitter as a medium for finding the news and interacting, but by gods it can be a frustrating place in transfer windows. I will never understand fans tweeting at a player asking if he’s going to sign (as if that would ever happen) or demanding the chairman sign his suggestion. People then get angry we might sign someone from a Champions League qualified team, and not Billy Sharp. It’s not your bloody choice pal. It’s down to Fawaz and Billy. Leave them be to get on with business. You’re not helping.

Stupid Stuff Posted This Week on Twitter

As part of anew series I will be featuring some of the more retarded tweets you may have missed for your enjoyment. Please sit bask in the relative stupidity.

Yes, because McGugan departing for free and being replaced by someone costing a million means they have no money. Plus also McGugan was highly inconsistent. Yes in his day one of the best, but when he was poor awful. Nice try though. Think you'll be appearing every week.

This ones not so much stupid as just ill thought

and how's that team going to work then? 3 strikers? Bizarre

This is pure stupidity. On their very first tweet

bravo. Well done on getting the team your supposedly representing right. Oh wait you didn;t.

The next one make me laugh at its naivity

Yes because only the player edits his "wikopedia"  and not any old person who can because thats what Wiki is.

Good old fashioned delusion

Yes why would you choose a team in Europe, recently in the Premier League with parachute money to burn over us really?

Thats just a sample folks. I will be watching more intently now

The Art of Good Rumour Mongering

The announcement by Forest we had agreed a deal for a player who would sign in the next 14 days has set minds flying with who it could be. What it starts is a wave of people “in the know”, who claim that they have sources or suchlike and know all the precise dealings of the club. And now with the transfer window cranking into life it’s started all of this cycle off in earnest. There are many rumours that have been out there in the last few days and in previous transfer windows so are frankly so ridiculous as to be pointless.

Let me give you an example. 7-8 years ago in a previous incarnation of this site, me and a co writer decided we needed an attention grabbing article. This is before the days where I regarded quality as way above quantity. We scoured the few forum and rumour sites that existed back then, and went with a plausible rumour. Marcus Bent, we needed a striker, he was out of favour, and it looked possible. So we suggested it was. It went crazy. We got more than hits than ever for anything, the rumour started doing the rounds of more reputable sites and the club even issued a disclaimer stating that it was false. This is before Twitter, before Facebook, we relied on NewsNow, but it clearly got onto forums. The thing is there was never any truth to it. So that’s how easy it is to something out there as “news.” Now we have social media to fan these flames.

At Christmas time or so we were oddly linked with Joe Cole on a loan deal before he re joined West Ham. People genuinely believed this could happen, and it starts because a wave of people of people on Twitter or Facebook blindly believe whatever they are told from any old source without questioning it.

Then there are the people who try to qualify their rumours by claiming to have a friend or relative who works at the club and “knows.” I am unsure why they think shop staff or ticket shop staff knows the entire transfer dealings of the club. For a start a lot of business these days is done out of Wilford Lane rather than the club itself.

I do enjoy the folk who say I’ve just been in West Bridgford Tesco and saw X player in there; he must be signing for the club. This one’s always bizarre. Or their estate agent friend has a new client who turns out to be so and so player. The type of rumour that can’t be qualified by anyone at all.

These are lazy attempts. They usually try and qualify it by putting “#fact” after it or suchlike like them putting that at the end almost makes it unquestionable. It’s an adult equivalent of writing I.D.S.T. (if you don’t know what it means I pity your childhood) on a pencil case at school about some spurious rumour or teenage love affair.

And why people decide that they have to know now bothers me. This never happened in the pre- Social media era, we’d have to sit and wait, and be glad when Ceefax or Teletext told you in the news we’d signed someone. Or phoning up the Teamtalk or Clubcall Premium rate numbers for inane gossip.

Because it’s easier to put a rumour out there and to a vast source of people it gets people starved of attention to start getting that attention. People just chuck any old name out there and someone will believe it. This gets worse from July, as the season approaches people are excited, but then also the kids are off school, and have nothing better it seems than to spend all day on twitter blathering on about how we should have been in for player Y who went to a Premiership club, or that they really rate player Z as he is good on FIFA, not seeing the blurs between reality and fiction, and not also guessing that this player really actually doesn’t fit with the managers plans, never mind would want to come to the club in the first place.

A breed of rumour monger just seems to be getting lazier, and just links us with any player being released in the Premier League, or hell even a player transfer listed, never mind if its top bracket club, so therefore would move down the Premiership if not abroad, and would also want a very level of wage. It is just sloppiness in the extreme. (This week I saw Denilson of Arsenal mentioned)

The current name doing the rounds is Raheem Sterling. This kid was starting games for one of the top Premiership clubs last season. He would be ripe for a long loan to a lower Premiership club, a Fulham, Norwich, Southampton. Not Forest. There is just a complete leap between faith and reality where common sense is missed out. Does it seem too good to be true? Well therefore it probably is.

I tend to stick to linking to a collection of linked names and comment on what I feel the validity of these stories are. I think if we did a roundup of those transfer round ups less than 10% of those names actually ever sign because the vast majority are fairly out the blue.

Also people suggesting we should sign this or that player should remember contrary to what they think they don’t in fact know more than Billy, or the scouting staff. They will know that player already, but will either know he’s not right for the club, not available, not suited or suchlike. So you thinking you’ve unearthed a diamond and can’t understand the clubs lack of action is ridiculous.

The #ITK accounts are tiresome though. As if a football agent will sit there tweeting football deals going down. He’ll be actually doing deals, or trying to scupper deals. Anyone who has read the Secret Footballer will have a better idea of the vagaries of this art. An agent being overt in suggesting deals are going ahead isn’t going to be very successful, so ergo is unreliable as a source of gossip.

Anyone who claims to have an inside source is lying, as the club would have long identified likely sources of rumours. Remember these could well scupper a deal, letting others know a deal is being done or that the player in question might be open to claiming to the club.

So in essence, whatever you see out there as fact, unless from a recognised national paper reporting on us, it’s all lies. Even then with the likes of John Percy it’s probably still lies. As many now say on Twitter. Don’t believe it till Fawaz tweets it.

The Ghost of Billy Davies

His name has once again appeared from nowhere following the shocking run of two games (note a heavily sarcastic lilt to this, I do not think it is shocking) without a win, coming 7 days after the best win of the season which had us all but promoted in these same fans eyes.

And now, and I trust it is down to Matchtalk last night which due to tech issues I was unable to listen to, that the usual array of nutjobs, cranks and attention seekers all called for Davies to be back. I entirely presume this from what I saw on both Facebook and Twitter using the usual refrain of we want our Billy back.

I even saw someone suggest the vast majority want him back in tweeting at Fawaz, although luckily, summarising these types intelligence it was a to a fake account (bravo)

I’m not one for questioning various people’s intellects and whatnot, but the majority (to use their vast sweeping statements they use too) are invariably people who don’t have the first fucking clue about this game. They just see he had success, and that this must mean he would again.

There is one reason I would ever want Davies back and that would be closure. Just as if he messed it up and failed you could finally put these to bed, and if he is the great prodigal son coming back to glory, then fine, we succeed. What I would expect is to be EXACTLY IN THE SAME POSITION WE ARE NOW. (Caps intended)

If Davies was in charge right now, in the top half a few points off the playoffs, would these same people be calling him into question the same way they do with SoD? Of course not.

I don’t even understand why I have to keep writing these pieces that explore a crisis that in my eyes doesn’t exist, doesn’t exist in the al-Hasawi’s eyes, not in the player’s eyes and in Sod’s eyes. But because some people aren’t happy unless we are 12 points clear at the top, here we are again, with people wanting to change a manager that hasn’t really failed. Yeah I agree we’ve hardly set the world alight. But we had no players in August, bar a few that mis-fired last season.

Frank Clark is lauded as a hero for what he did that team he took up struggled through the first few months. Because it was a new team that had been melded together with many new stars.

If you were to bring in Davies, who people proclaim to be the master and wouldn’t make the apparently questionable signings SoD has (I disagree entirely here by the way) can I remind you this is the man who signed McGoldrick and Adebola, and in the loan market saddled us with the expensive Konchesky and Boyd who were much maligned? Or are we just glossing over these facts. Under Davies we invariably limped through the first few months of seasons before cresting around now on a decent run leading to a late January slump.

Case in point is the same guy I referenced in a blog the other day. A guy I work with who goes to a handful of games at best and doesn’t listen to game. He wants Davies back. People cite the West Broom game time and time again about how good it was. One game. One game. Shall we over look how he ballsed up the playoff twice, made questionable selection decisions, (sound familiar) and kept choosing a defensive midfielder people didn’t like because they frankly don’t understand a defensive midfielder that doesn’t charge round like a headless chicken like Evans or Moussi ever did. I.e. they only understand all out attack, which just doesn’t work. They don’t understand the nuanced art of tactics.

SoD got critiqued for choosing one up front against Hull. It wasn’t one up front in the strictest sense, as the midfield was structured for players to get forward, it was meant to see Coppinger and Reid wide, but because they lack pace they couldn’t support like a McCleary could. Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, West Brom, Newcastle, Arsenal have used one up front this season. At home. But no, this point completely underlines the mentality that some fans just won’t accept O’Driscoll because they wanted Davies back.

In their heads he was only got rid of because he fell out with Doughty, Burt and Arthur. Arthur by the way whose name I haven’t heard uttered once with contempt this year yet he’s doing the same job.

The main point I will always make is this. If Davies is so damn good why hasn’t he got another job yet? And let’s remember he was openly touting himself round for jobs with Forest too. If SoD did that these same fans would be on the net teeth gnashing faster than anything fast you care to mention. Davies is poison. He constantly bickers and moans and undermines the squad. Always saying we need this that and the other, commuting from Scotland. Davies didn’t like board interference and wanted control. The al-Hasawis are not fully hands off. They have advisers, Dr Tarek for one, and have signed players that the manager didn’t request in Jenas. He wouldn’t function well under this, would we recreate the us v them mentality again?

People say with SoD we have the small club mentality but more me small club mentality is to constantly look back and not forward. Davies is the past; he’s in the rear view mirror. Forget him. You undermine the current regime by mentioning him. This will only go away through success so get BEHIND the team. Push them forward.

Drama! Intrigue! Made Up Stuff on Twitter!

Melt down. That’s all I can say. The Forest timeline this morning has been nothing but plan straight ridiculous. 2 players deleting accounts Halford apparently either being hacked or having false screen grabs made of what he said by other people. (It did say this isn’t what he signed up for, but the quality of text and general look of the screen didn’t look “right” suggests it’s fake, plus there’s clearly a discoloured greyed area) It’s faintly ridiculous. Rather than think calm or sanely, the sizeable number just assumed the very worst.

It’s a worry how readily and easily so many lap it up. Look I’m as guilty as anyone for refreshing my page this morning to see what’s really occurring, but the difference has been trying to restore a semblance of normality and calm instead retweeting every piece of blind speculation, or making up your won unfounded reasons for what may or may not have happened. Though I did like the comment that maybe he was just on about his Broadband deal, or Mobile phone contract.

It seems however we have not learnt our lessons from a couple of years ago. Remember when Doughty was on Twitter? Remember how we liked it and applauded it, and then when the merest hint of something we didn’t like occurred fans hounded him off. Well there we go again; it may or may not have happened with Lansbury and Coppinger. Halford has been quick to say the comments attributed to him have nothing to do with him, and in the face of anything to argue otherwise why would we disbelieve him?

Now maybe there are one or two interlopers. Fans of other teams revelling in the mass gullibility of some of us. Or even just revelling in the fake drama and intrigue they have started.

The one thing I notice with Forest fans on Twitter more than most other clubs is our readiness to blindly start thinking that anything tweeted must be true, no matter the quality of the source. So that something from the club itself or a respected news outlet doesn’t seem to register more highly than a random teenager making shit up. In fact we are so readily seeking out something newsworthy that that the random made up news gets more attention because it’s “fresh” and “unreported”

For instance, I saw someone suggesting Coppinger and Lansbury had been in a fight and that’s why they both left. What? Where the hell did they get that from other than, well there must be a reason, I don’t know a reason, so I’m going to blindly speculate.

In august it was silly with transfer rumours, but now because we have lost 2 games in a row (but remain in the top half a short distance from the playoffs) people are willing and ready to believe this isn’t because we happened to lose 2 games, but because the squad all hate each other (despite evidence otherwise on twitter) and that the Kuwaiti’s want to sack Sean O’Driscoll (ask yourself if they were inpatient and wanted him out would they have quoted a 2 year plan, and for the matter put in a lesser name manager and then give him no time?)

No people are so ready and so willing to believe any old gossip so they can go off and talk about it too. We all know it’s probably false, but it’s a bit of blind gossip and who doesn’t enjoy that?

I was going to post today about the random occasional idiots I have heard saying SoD should be sacked or at least called into question. The usual Billy Davies Acolytes materialised from nowhere on Saturday evening (forget him) and a bloke at work yesterday, who doesn’t go to games or even listen said we need to sack him. That is what I am mainly annoyed with. Part timers, who don’t know anything trying to be the ones spreading the rumours, or the ones cultivating disharmony, because , well I don’t know why someone would try and do that, but I guess it makes them feel involved, rather than actually spend their time and energy actually getting behind the club.

That’s the crux of this. Instead of sneaking round on Twitter trying to make gossip, or tweeting stuff at players about they aren’t good enough, tweet them stuff about how we can do well, and positivity. You really think a player receiving tweets telling him he’s not good enough will really be spurred or inspired to play for us? If some stupid 15 year old keyboard warrior abuses him time and time again, it doesn’t make you feel settled. Yes they should be bigger than it, but they are just humans too. We all do better in our roles in life with encouragement. I guess the ones abusing are as I say bored kids, or just bored wastrels trying to feel better about their own crap lives. It genuinely at times feels at times that people want to destabilise the club and create problems.

Keep Calm, and stay Loyal.

The Power and the Shame of Twitter

Twitter has become an invaluable tool for communicating football news in a way that Facebook or even texts never could. The way we can swap ideas or news via this medium to people we may not know but share a common interest isn’t exactly new but the manner we use it now is amazingly useful. I have used it more than enough times to form the beginning kernel of an idea for an article.

In a way that forums were and still are, this instant communication has meant you also come into contact with a greater variety of people, many are fine, and we simply just want to communicate about Forest. Some are idiots, who are either hell-bent on ruining it, or are that ignorant and obnoxious they don’t realise they are doing it.

For 10 years we have had a forum on the Soccer 24-7 page, fairly constantly active in that time, it has been one of the more well used of the club forums on the site. I’d say that there is a strong correlation between Twitters expansion and the golden age of forums passing. People just want that instant gratification now and not wait for another poster to comment.

This is of course progress and cannot be sniffed at. It is merely the way the world is going. However, like the forum had its trolls, so now to does Twitter. I always regarded it as being a higher brow version of Facebook. I think everyone has seen that most discussion on Facebook quickly descends into a slanging match. Unfortunately as things get more popular those same people have found Twitter.

The huge added advantage of Twitter is the presence of journalists and players, and the ability to directly communicate with them. This is a wonderful way of having contact with your customers, your fans, and your people. In theory, in a wonderful world this works beautifully.

However as I said the dark underbelly of attention seeking idiots or the plan obnoxious are out in force like never before. It started becoming more and more apparent in late 2010ish. When Forest fans complaining about lack of communication saw the chairman Nigel Doughty join Twitter. What better way could there be to get answers on matters from the horse’s mouth so to speak. He could share with us his frustrations his happiness, what he was thinking. Wonderful. But then there are those who see this is as a way to hurl insults or abuse in a way no one with any kind of self respect would do face to face, so why is it behind the relative anonymity of a computer screen feel the need to do so? In short we all know what happened. It forced Nigel Doughty to stop using his Twitter account. And when things got worse people then started rounding on his son. Laughable at best, horrendous in reality.

Lately has seen a new twist. Over the past 6 months many fans have started taking frustrations directly with journalists reporting on Forest. Sometimes seemingly blaming them for the decline in Forests fortunes. I’m not exactly sure what planet these people live on at times. Anyway, so when said journalists report what they know, they get abuse from people who basically don’t like what they are seeing. Is this what we have to come to? Keyboard warriors ranting and raving at someone not telling him what he wants to hear.

And now this whole crux of where we are at now. The takeover. The only reason people start to believe anything is down to Twitter. Tweets from the supposed family of Fawaz al Hawsawi (do we really know if any of these accounts are legit) Pictures tweeted of his daughter in a t shirt that says Forest on it. So what? This could be an elaborate game of smoke and mirrors here. People are so desperate to believe that they start blindly believing any rumour posted and see truth where it might be.

Let me give you an example of how this can be. In a previous guise of this site, when we tried to be a news site, rather than a Views site, we noticed a rival site completely ripping us off. Everything we posted they would copy. So we made something up. We said we were signing Nathan Blake, and sure enough the other site copied us. Job done. Lo and behold the rumour took off, forgetting that the wider world would be watching it resulted in Forest having to release a statement saying they were not interested in signing him. The moral of this story? People believe anything if it is presented in a way that it looks like fact or official. So when the ball started rolling on this takeover being yesterday (the 21st) everyone just started blindly believing. Yes there has been a number of saner ones amongst us preaching caution, but the majority have simple believed it MUST be true. But that’s the problem with the Internet, it might not be, and often isn’t.

We have become so accustomed to instant news and gossip on Twitter and the like that when we don’t get it we get disillusioned. People will be checking for news, and that’s when attention seekers come in, and start boasting they know this and that’s happening. I’ve had people tweet me saying they saw so and so at the ground or the training ground, I guess in the hope that I’d take said news as gospel with little or no grounds and write it up. That or retweet it. People are that desperate for followers they will try anything like that. Embellishing the truth and creating lies merely to give the impression of new secret information they have.

Last week saw another evolution. Insulting players, Joel Lynch specifically. This is a player whose future is up in the air, and yet you have Muppets tweeting at him to basically sign up or go elsewhere. Yeah because a players whose future is in the balance is a brilliant target for your vitriol. To be fair to Lynch he basically presented the guys head on a platter by saying if he doesn’t sign his deal it will be the other guys fault. Cue abuse to the abuser. But then how much love is Matt Derbyshire going to have for a club when the fans everyday just tweet abuse at him. Same with just about any players on there. It hardly endears him to the club to try harder.

And now you get some sites hell bent on taking that news and passing it off as their own, or moulding it into their own view with no real substance, again purely for hits.It means hits come before integrity, and that's now somewhere you want to be.

I won’t change anything with this article. People will do as they have been doing. For me it’s more a cathartic process of getting this off my chest and hopefully maybe getting through to one or two people that Twitter rumours may be false. Abuse tweets to people Forest related are maybe not always the best idea. And finally, maybe, just maybe, there is a wider world out there, and everything doesn’t necessarily appear on Twitter first.

The Social Networking Ban

Steve Cotterill has put a ban on the Forest players using social networking sites, banning them around £1000 a word if they do tweet, or post on Facebook.

On the one hand this at least will ruin any fake player accounts that do exist. This is a blessing as some of these are frankly embarrassing seeing people pretend to be players. And only really a couple of our players are prolific tweeters, and Dexter really has nothing better to do anyway.

Some have suggested its a reaction to Ishmael Miller outburst, it's not Cotterill did the same with Pompey.

I am torn as to if its serves much purpose. At the end of the day as long as they tweet in their own personal time I have no problems. Even if it is a player in melt down at the fans of the club. On the other hand it will avoid any silly misunderstandings, because lets face it, most of them aren't the brightest.

You also lose maybe a close connection with the fans that exists. Many of us follow the 6-7 players we do have on there. It's nice to see what the players say at times and their thanks for when things go well. To deny this link I think takes something away.

However, many other teams have similar bans, and lets be frank, most of what they have to say is rather bland and pointless. At the end of the day most people tweeting players or pretending to be them are attention seeking morons anyway, so that's not going to be missed.

At least the fake Facebook profiles have all stopped pretending to be their respective players. And it should finish of anyone elses ideas of making any more of these embarrassments.
