Calderwood Sacked

Considering how vociferously they held on to him over the summer when both ourselves and Birmingham were linked with the Scotsman, it's somewhat surprising and a little amusing to see Hibernian sack Calderwood.

The past few months have seen a great many changes between where we could have been and where we are now, and Calderwood wasn't able to be part of McClarens revolution.

It does occur to me what with eh back room staff all staying on that he could well have ended up taking charge of the Reds again when Steve was got rid of. That would have been a great irony really.

The flip side of this is of course that Billy Davies is a very high profile Scottish manager out of work and therefore has been linked now with this job. This is hardly surprising news.

Whats also sort of fascination,going back to Calderwood is that Hibs essentially passed up around £250,000 or whatever we offered in compensation, only to then sack a manager that was highly unpopular there anyway. In researching what Hibs fans thought of him, all I saw was Hearts fan completely mocking at how he had led Hibs to be a laughing stock, with Thornehill and Agogo as two of his signings, neither of them doing anything much beyond League One, and with Agogo essentially sitting the last two years out by playing in two bob leagues for two bob teams.

On the other hand I always wished Calderwood the best. Some fans just never warmed to him, and the guy was genuine and a nice bloke to boot, but it might be seen that he is not a capable Number One and might just be a capable assistant

Calderwood Decision Nigh

It finally seems from a number of sources I am reading that we will finally get to know either way if Calderwood is going to be returning as our assistant or if heis heading to Birmingham.

According to the Daily Record,they seem to think he is going to choose Birmingham as his port of call. A general consensus amongst all the writers and fans comments is that everyone expects Calderwood to be gone very shortly either way. Many are very glad about this.

It appears from the media north of the border who tried to probe Calderwood on his future post match after a friendly Berwick is that he wants to leave. His heart isn't in the job, He refused to discuss his future,issuing a demand to not be asked questions about it.

There was an appeal from ex Forest player, Matt Thornhill,now at Hibs for Calderwood to stay,and his comment was that they all think he will. This is just player talk of course. They rarely accept anything is wrong.


What is interesting is some other reports mention that they think Calderwood actually favours moving to Forest, yet Birmingham are closer to agreeing a desirable compensation package to Hibs.

Calderwood Tug o' War

The installation of Chris Hughton as manager at Birmingham City has created a game of tug of war between them and Nottingham Forest over the future of Colin Calderwood.

Calderwood was of course Hughton's assistant at Newcastle, after being our former manager, and now he is very much a man in demand. After it was revealed in the week that McClaren wanted Calderwood to be his assistant and take charge of young player development.

But now following the appointment of Hughton, He wants his former assistant who got Newcastle promoted to join him at St Andrews. All of this of course is forgetting that Hibernian, where Calderwood currently enjoys employment still want to retain their man. They did after all say no approach would be welcome.

All this hullabaloo creates somewhat of a media storm around the Scottish former defender. Maybe it plays into Hibs hand when working out compensation packages. Maybe it shows that genuinely the man is highly regarded, and those Forest fans bemoaning the potential reappointment of Calderwood at the club are wrong.

I think the likelihood would be Calderwood would follow Hughton, he knows he works well with him, and recently. Birmingham will have deeper pockets and can offer European football. However, Calderwood may feel he has work left to be done with Forest. Additionally maybe he wants to carry on with Hibs,and prove he is a good manager.

The coming few days will be very interesting.
